Forrest Gump

The title sequence in Forrest gump utilises a falling feather as a focal point of the camera, with the text appearing over the top of the image as the camera tracks the feather on it's descent, revealing the landscape and buildings and giving a sort of idea of where the film is set.

As the feather falls there is also a soundtrack being played which continues right up until the main character, played by Tom Hanks, closes his suitcase, while the soundtrack is being played, the sound of the passing cars is quietened to the point it can barely be heard, emphasising the beauty and tranquility of the opening. Once the music stops, the harsh sound of the brakes on the bus can be heard.

As for camera shots, the majority of the opening utilises a pan to track the feather as it gracefully floats through the beautiful, tranquil landscape, and they persist in using this until Forrest Gump places the feather in his suitcase, keeping the feather as the focal point until the titles stop rolling. The camera then features a close up of Forrest Gump's face followed by a wide shot as the bus rolls into the scene.

The Introduction, created by Alan Silvestri, is very creative and beautiful and sets the scene for the rest of the film to unfold, placing the viewer right in the lap of the protagonist.

For our production we intend to utilise a similar idea of having a different focal point other than the text on screen, but also having white text over the top of the image.

Little Miss Sunshine

The title sequence in 'Little Miss Sunshine' features simple, easy to read black text over a yellow background, The yellow colour is used due to the colour of the campervan in the movie itself, which is where most of the story of the film takes place. The yellow colour is also used ironically as itis usually associated with happiness, yet the film tackles hard hitting aspects of life in a darkly comic manner.

Within the title sequence the names of the characters are shown, but interestingly, unlike most films, the name of the protagonist of the film is shown last, which is a contrast as usually they feature the name of the lead actor at the start of the cast list, such as how they had done for Forrest Gump.

For our film we intend to also use a bright colour palette much like the one in 'Little Miss Sunshine' however, we intend to use the more traditional colour scheme of white font on a black background.
