Synopsis

This coming of age story will follow the moral growth of a seventeen year old girl named Finn. She is stumbling through life ignoring her mother, grasping at a non-existant relationship with her father and failing to be a good friend. She hides behind a hand-made mask and never finds the time for school work. As she learns new information about each of her parents, she begins to see how unappreciative she has been.

Todorov's "Conventional Narrative Structure"

Todorov stated that all films use the same narrative structure. Todorov used three terms to define the three main pats of a narrative structure (the beginning, middle and end), these terms are:

  • Equilibrium - the balanced normality of the world of the story

  • Disequilibrium - the unbalanced world between the problem and the climax

  • New Equilibrium - a return to normality at the end - returning the world to a balanced state.

The equilibrium and the new equilibrium are not exactly the same. The problems of the disequilibrium will have caused the world of the text to change in some way or the characters have learned lessons as the narrative developed.

In our short film we can apply Todorov's Narrative Structure Theory.

  • Opening(Equilibrium) - In our film the exposition is where Finn wakes up and leaves her house and goes to meet Logan and they both hang out, here it becomes evident Finn is skipping school and doesn't appreciate her mum due to the fact she threw her lunch in the bin.

  • Problem (Disequilibrium) - The problem in our short film comes in when Finn and Logan return to Finn's house, where they discover Ann hasn't gone to work as she has been fired, Ann and Finn then argue and Finn storms out, leaving Logan behind at the house. The major problem here is the fact that Ann has lost her job.

  • Complication (Disequilibrium) - The complication comes back as Finn sits awaiting her father's arrival on the park bench, this is a further complication as it proves to be a hinderance towards Finn achieving her goal of meeting up with her father.

  • Climax (New Equilibrium) - The resolution comes about as the mother approaches Finn on the bench and sits by her side and they talk it over, eventually resolving the former conflict which took place.

  • Resolution (New Equilibrium) - The next morning Finn has already left when the mother comes downstairs, late for work, to find that Finn has made her lunch for her to save her time with a little note saying good luck. Logan also fulfils her wish of buying a tortoise. This is where a new equilibrium is formed, where the previous problem has caused Finn to mature and begin to appreciate her mother more.
