Poster Planning

After one of our reshooting sessions we decided that we could also take photos to use for our poster as the scenery and view that we could capture behind Finn as she stood on the bench would add to the aesthetic of the poster.

This was our Original Image that we were intending to use as a basis of our posters.

This idea then developed as Hannah had included the Logan mask into the poster, using photoshop to cut around the image of the two masks as well as taking away the texture, making them appear 2D.

One of the initial plans was to utilise the face of the Finn mask to create a minimalistic poster

From the previous image, this poster was created, and while we were quite happy with how it had turned out, we decided to scrap it.

However, we decided to abandon our initial ideas in favour of our now finished poster as we feared that it would look too cartoon-oriented and as such would give the wrong first impression about our film. We also received feedback from our teachers who had reminded us that film posters usually feature reviews, ratings, tag lines and various different production company logos, all of which we were lacking and didn't have enough room to add them on to our initial poster idea. our teacher also agreed with us about the "Cartoon" feel of our poster and as such we decided to instead use a photograph.

Development of our Poster

Our initial plan for the new and improved poster can be seen to the right, however, this poster still had problems and did not fill all of the criteria provided to us by our teacher. For example, there was a lack of room for the reviews, ratings, quotes and taglines, although  we were able to incorporate a few of the production company logos in the bottom right corner. While this showed that our poster still wasn't complete, it was evident that this was a step in the right direction.

Our Final Product

Our Final Product

In order to rectify the issues we had encountered with our first draft using this image, we changed the page orientation to landscape to allow us more room to the side of the picture where we would later add the reviews and ratings, as well as the tagline 'Create Your Own Reality'. This way we were also able to incorporate a few more of our production companies into our poster as well.

Tagline

Our tag-line "Create Your Own Reality", we feel, is very appropriate to our short film due to the fact that our chosen genre is a comedy drama and that drama is often a supposed representation of 'reality'. We felt that this term had a degree of ambiguity to it as it could also refer to the sort of reality that Finn and Logan have created themselves by making and wear their masks, which creates a sort of metaphorical and literal barrier between them and the rest of the world. The "Create" part of the tag line could also refer to Finn's creativity in making herself a mask which is an impression that we wanted to give about the character through the set design. The expression on the mask is a rather comical looking distraught face, which we felt was symbolic of her attitude towards her life and the conflicts she has within her family.

Social Media

One of the ways that short film companies market and distribute their film is through the use of social media. In order to attempt to recreate the professionality we also set up social media accounts on three different platforms: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, all of them having /FinnTheMovie at the end of the URL. Hannah was in charge of creating the Facebook account, while Megan created the Instagram and Twitter accounts.

Within the shape of Finn's head the protagonist of the film can be seen, looking into the camera. Photographs of the actors in costume is common in posters of all film types.

Along the top of the poster we have clearly listed the names of the actor. This is typical of film posters.

This is a short film festival that is held in Dorset, we included this to make our poster seem more realistic.

We also included quotes as well as ratings from reviews as these are commonly displayed on modern day film posters.

Here we clearly displayed the name of the director above the title of the film which is a common feature of film posters.

For the credits at the bottom of the poster we adopted the same font and style as those used in professional film posters.

At the bottom of the poster we included our production company logos which give an insight to the funding and production of our film.

We also incorporated social media logos followed by '/FinnTheMovie' as a large portion of media companies nowadays do a lot of advertising through social media.

Underneath our title we included a tag line 'Create your own reality' as nearly all contemporary posters include a tag line and as such this would make our poster seem more professional.
